Forging is the process by which metal is heated and is shaped by applying compressive force. Usually the compressive force is in the form of hammer blows using a power hammer or a press. Forgings are consistent from piece to piece, without visual defects, such as porosity voids, inclusions, etc. Physical properties (such as strength, ductility and toughness) are much better in a forging than in the base metal.
Many different metals, such as aluminum, brass, and steel may be utilized in a forging process, including various types of alloy combinations. Operations include complete tool and die fabrication in addition to the complete forging process. Secondary operations can also be provided, such as face milling, drilling, coining, threading, cold trimming, etc.
